The Santander Spanish Women’s Professional Championship 2025 begins tomorrow, Wednesday, at the Heathland course at La Hacienda Links Golf, a course that is making its debut as the venue for the tournament and which is set to be one of the main attractions of this edition due to its technical, strategic and physically demanding nature. The championship, which will be played until Friday 21 November, will feature 32 professionals in competition, including six Andalusians, and will offer an added attraction: the presence of four recent champions, all of whom are aiming for a new title.

Among them is Luna Sobrón, three-time champion in 2018, 2019 and 2020, who arrives with a chance to become the first player to win four times in this event. In her first encounter with the Heathland course, the Balearic player particularly appreciated the importance of strategy: “It’s a different course, uneven, with birdie opportunities, but you have to play calmly. I’m confident, I’m in good form and I’d love to win that fourth title; it would be a dream come true.” Sobrón, who is having a great season on the Ladies European Tour (LET), said she feels calm and ready to face the final stretch, which also includes the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España presented by Oysho.

The reigning champion, Ana Peláez, faces the week with renewed enthusiasm after a year marked by a break from competition and an intense return to work since September. ‘It’s been a rollercoaster, but I’m enjoying golf again and looking forward to competing. Defending the title gives me a boost of motivation,’ she explained. Regarding the course, the Malaga native stressed that ‘being smart from the tee’ will be key, especially if the wind comes into play. Peláez, who is already familiar with the course, albeit not in depth, will face the last two weeks of the year with the momentum that comes from playing close to home.

Another of the big contenders is Nuria Iturrioz, champion in 2023 and winner this year of the LET’s Aramco Houston Championship. The Balearic Islander arrives eager despite the wear and tear of the season: “I’m really looking forward to it, and I value that a lot. Heathland is visually narrow, technical, and reminds me a bit of Finca Cortesín.‘ For Iturrioz, repeating her title would be ’something that is always on your mind as a Spaniard,” especially after also being the Spanish Amateur Champion.

The fourth champion present this week is Teresa Toscano, winner in 2022, who highlights both the quality of the design and its physical demands: ‘You’ve given us a great course. It’s incredible… and also tremendously physically demanding,’ she said with a laugh. For Toscano, the key will be managing her energy and staying patient: “There are holes where placing the ball is essential. You have to play with your head.” The Huelva native believes that Heathland is excellent preparation for the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España presented by Oysho, which will be held from 27 to 30 November at the Real Guadalhorce Club de Golf.

With a new course for most players, a layout full of strategic nuances and a field of champions with renewed ambition, the 2025 Santander Spanish Women’s Professional Championship promises to be one of the most open and attractive editions in recent years. Three days of competition in which Heathland will have a lot to say and in which part of the tournament’s history could be rewritten.

About La Hacienda Links Golf Resort

La Hacienda Links Golf Resort, located in San Roque with privileged views of the Strait of Gibraltar, is one of the most outstanding golf resorts in southern Europe. The resort combines first-class facilities with two complementary courses: the Links, with its coastal and panoramic character, and the Heathland, the championship course designed by Dave Thomas. The latter offers a varied and demanding layout, with natural undulations, large greens and strategically placed obstacles that demand precision and careful planning with every shot. Its length of over 6,100 metres and its integration into the landscape of the Cadiz countryside make Heathland an ideal setting for top-level professional competitions.
