The Santander Golf Tour faces its penultimate event with the Doubles Championship in Seville
- This week, Club Zaudín Golf will host the circuit’s doubles tournament, with fourteen top-level pairs taking part
- Lauren Holmey and Alejandra Llaneza will battle it out for the ranking title in the last scoring event of the season
The Santander Golf Tour 2025 celebrates one of its most special events this week with the Doubles Championship, which takes place at the Club Zaudín Golf in Seville from 5 to 6 November. The event, a traditional fixture on the circuit’s calendar, is played over two days: the first in fourball format (best ball) and the second in greensome format (both players tee off and choose the best ball to continue with alternate shots), a format that combines strategy and spectacle in equal measure.
The tournament also comes with an added incentive: the fight for the circuit ranking, which will be decided at this event. Dutch player Lauren Holmey, the leader with 180,045 points, starts with a clear advantage over Mexico’s Alejandra Llaneza, who is second with 143,375 points. To have a chance of snatching the title, Llaneza needs to win the tournament and Holmey, who is paired with Switzerland’s Vanessa Knecht, needs to finish eleventh or worse. Considering that there are fourteen pairs in total in the championship, the Dutch player’s chances of becoming the ranking champion are very high.
Holmey arrives in Seville in excellent form, having secured three victories this season at Empordà Golf, Club de Campo Laukariz and Real Club de Golf de La Coruña. Ahead of the tournament, the Dutch player was excited: “I was really looking forward to playing here in Seville. It looks like the weather is going to be kind to us and I’m really looking forward to playing with Vanessa too. I’ve known her for a long time and I think we can play very well together. Obviously, I want to win here, but my dream is to play in the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España presented by Oysho. I’ve known that for a long time and it’s one of the main reasons I’m here. I’m going to give it my all with Vanessa. We’ve never competed together before, but we have a good connection and that’s why I think we can do very well”.
For her part, Alejandra Llaneza, who is competing alongside Seville’s Beatriz Barrios, is approaching the tournament with enthusiasm and ambition, although she is aware of the difficulty: “I’m very happy to be here, especially for the doubles tournament, which is a different and exciting format that I’ve always enjoyed playing. As for my chances of winning the title, I know it’s very difficult and depends on many factors, but I’ve been training with Beatriz, getting to know the course she has played on many times, and we’ve been considering different strategies so that we can at least do what we can.”
Alongside the two main contenders for the ranking, fourteen pairs will be fighting for the title on the Seville course. Among those registered are prominent names such as Amaia Latorre and Marina Escobar, Clara Moyano and María Parra, England’s Jae Bowers and Brogan Townend, Portugal’s Sara Gouveia alongside her compatriot Mónia Bernardo, Emma Lundgren and Italy’s Maria Vittoria Corbi, and Spain’s María Villanueva and María Herráez, the latter having won last year’s Doubles Championship at El Bosque Golf Club (Valencia) alongside Scotland’s Clara Young. Also competing will be Lina Belmati and Lucie André, Pia Koivuranta and Linda Henriksson, Shannon O’Dwyer and amateur Amy Sutheran, Clara Pietri and Reme Cortés, Marta Muñoz and Nina Pegova, as well as young Hannah Karg and Chiarah Horder (amateur), who complete the list of participants.
