Tenerife reaffirms its commitment to women’s golf with a sustainable event with international impact

- Dimple Melwani, CEO of Turismo de Tenerife, takes the honorary shot to inaugurate the Tenerife Women’s Open
- The previous day was marked by a Pro-Am full of stars and a clear message: Tenerife is golf, sustainability, and excellence
The day before the start of the Tenerife Women’s Open 2025 featured Dimple Melwani, CEO of Turismo de Tenerife, who was responsible for taking the honorary shot on the tee of hole 1 at Abama Golf. This shot officially inaugurates a competition in which the island will once again be the international focus of women’s golf.
Melwani highlighted the importance of hosting an event like this: “Tenerife has all the ingredients: an unbeatable climate, connectivity, excellent courses, and a highly professional team. Today we are at Abama, but we have nine golf courses that are a real source of pride. All of this makes it possible for organizers of such important tournaments to take notice of us.”
The Tenerife Women’s Open is a strategic commitment for Turismo de Tenerife as part of its policy to attract high-quality tourism. As Melwani points out, “these types of events give us international visibility and allow us to continue positioning the island among the continent’s top golf destinations. We welcome 132 players from more than 35 countries, and with them, an audience that will be able to enjoy everything Tenerife has to offer.” In this regard, the CEO highlighted the experiential nature of the players’ and visitors’ stay: “Many of the participants have already told us that they have taken the opportunity to go on excursions or get to know the island. People don’t just come here to compete, but to enjoy a complete experience centered on golf, the landscape, the culture, and the Canarian lifestyle.”
One of the messages that Melwani emphasized most was the environmental commitment of the island and its golf sector: “97% of the water used on the courses is desalinated or regenerated, and in no case is water used for human consumption. In addition, efficient technology and low-consumption grasses have been implemented to minimize the use of resources. It is a sustainable model that responds to our vision of responsible tourism.”
Coinciding with World Environment Day, which is celebrated tomorrow, Melwani recalled that sustainability is not only a requirement, but an active part of the island’s tourism narrative: “We work hand in hand with the sector to continuously improve facilities and reinforce this model. Abama Golf is an example of sustainability, but the other courses are also doing a magnificent job in this regard. Tenerife wants to remain a destination where outdoor sports can be practiced all year round, with high standards of quality and sustainability.”
Finally, Melwani wanted to send a message of welcome to the players and the public: “I wish you all the best of luck. You are an example not only for your sporting achievements, but also for what you represent. Here, you are all winners and, above all, ambassadors for quality tourism. Enjoy the tournament and the island, and experience it to the fullest.”
A high-level Pro-Am before the big event
Before the battle for the title begins, Abama Golf hosted the official Pro-Am of the Tenerife Women’s Open on Wednesday, where professional and amateur players enjoyed a fun day playing in a Tour Scramble Par is my friend format.
The winning team was led by Helen Briem and Marta Sanz, who signed an exceptional round of -26. Second place went to the team of Marta Spiazzi—invited after her victory in the Santander Golf Tour Match-Play—and Hannah Screen, with -23, while Rémi Bacardi and Canarian Emma Cabrera-Bello closed out the podium with -19.
Tomorrow, the official competition will begin, with the 132 best golfers on the continent battling for the title in a dream setting. Once again, Tenerife is the perfect stage where sport, sustainability, and tourism excellence come together.
