Santander Golf Tour Cantabria: match play, excitement, and a spot in the Tenerife Women’s Open

- The tournament kicks off tomorrow in medal play format and will determine the sixteen players who will compete in the match play on Thursday and Friday
- The top-ranked player at the end of the tournament will receive an invitation to the Tenerife Women’s Open, part of the Ladies European Tour
The Santander Golf Tour returns this week to Real Golf de Pedreña, a historic venue that once again hosts one of the events marked in red on the players’ calendars. The tournament, which combines medal play and match play, officially starts tomorrow, Wednesday, May 14, following today’s traditional Pro-Am on a course that is in impeccable condition.
The opening day will be played in medal play format, with tee times starting at 8:30 a.m., where all participants will compete to finish among the top sixteen and thus advance to the final knockout stage. Starting on Thursday, the tournament will be decided in match play format, one of the most spectacular in professional golf, with one-on-one matches until the champion is crowned on Friday, the 16th.
This year, in addition to the prestige and circuit points, there is an additional incentive: the top-ranked player in the Santander Golf Tour at the end of the tournament will receive an invitation to the Tenerife Women’s Open, a Ladies European Tour event to be held June 5-8 at Abama Golf. The rankings are so close going into this week that any player who wins in Pedreña could claim the coveted spot.
It is no coincidence that Real Golf de Pedreña is the venue for this very special format. The Cantabrian course is perfectly suited to match play, offering narrow fairways, challenging greens, and spectacular views. In recent years, the tournament has provided some unforgettable moments: Harang Lee was the champion in 2020, Clara Moyano in 2021, Elena Hualde in 2022, and Mireia Prat in 2023. In last year’s edition, Russia’s Nina Pegova defeated Marta Muñoz from Ávila after an intense final, securing her first victory on the circuit.
Match play brings a unique emotional and strategic component. Players must constantly adapt to their opponent’s game, take risks, and stay focused on every hole. It is a format that rewards courage and tactical intelligence, which is why it is a favorite among many of the Santander Golf Tour participants.
With a course in excellent condition, a top-level line-up, and a lot at stake, everything is set for Real Golf de Pedreña to once again become the epicenter of national women’s golf for three days of maximum excitement.
