Real Golf de Pedreña, venue for the third round of the Santander Golf Tour

- The iconic Cantabrian course will host a challenge between the best players on the circuit
- The tournament will take place between May 14 and 16, combining medal play on the opening day with match play on the following two days
This morning, the third round of the Santander Golf Tour was presented in Cantabria, specifically at Real Golf de Pedreña, where some of the best players on the circuit will gather. In 2024, Russia’s Nina Pegova defeated Marta Muñoz from Ávila in the match play final in an event that attracts more foreign talent every year.
The presentation of the event was attended by Juan Ramón Lantero, member of the Board of Directors of Real Golf de Pedreña; Juan Carlos Alba, president of the Cantabrian Golf Federation; Marina Cañete, commercial director of Santander Private Banking in Cantabria and Asturias; and Alicia Garrido, director of the Santander Golf Tour.
Juan Ramón Lantero, member of the Board of Directors of Real Golf de Pedreña, explained that “the success of the partnership between the Santander Golf Tour and Pedreña is due to many things, but Ana Botín’s strong connection to golf and to this club in particular certainly plays a role. Her grandfather was the founder and her father was a great benefactor of the club. This combination of passion for golf and an iconic course like Pedreña makes everything fall into place.“ Regarding the condition of the course, Lantero noted that ”the course is spectacular. Work has been done throughout the year, with constant maintenance and some specific actions such as spiking the fairways and greens, which was done last month with this tournament in mind. The players will be able to enjoy it to the fullest.”
He also highlighted the impact of the tournament on the region: “The Santander Golf Tour is already a benchmark for women’s golf in Spain and generates a lot of interest among the local public, especially women, which helps to promote the sport among the younger generations.”
Marina Cañete, commercial director of Santander Private Banking in Cantabria and Asturias, emphasized that “the Santander Golf Tour is a firm commitment by Banco Santander to sport and professional women’s golf. For us, it is a wonderful opportunity to share a very special day with our customers in a unique setting such as Pedreña.” Cañete also praised the Pro-Am experience: “Our customers look forward to it with excitement year after year. It is a day that allows us to get away from the daily grind and enjoy a different experience, which strengthens the ties between the bank, our clients, and the club. In addition, the connection that is created by sharing hole after hole with the professionals is unique.”
Juan Carlos Alba, president of the Cantabrian Golf Federation, highlighted that holding a tournament on the circuit in Pedreña “combines history, modernity, and financial support. It is a perfect combination for hosting a sporting event of this level. Pedreña is one of the six founding clubs of the RFEG and one of the most emblematic courses in the country due to its beauty, design, and surroundings.” On the impact of the tournament, he added: “These types of events have a very positive promotional effect. They help to raise the profile of women’s golf and inspire young hopefuls. I wish we could bring all the girls who play golf in Cantabria to see these players live and get excited about reaching that level one day.”
Alicia Garrido, director of the Santander Golf Tour, celebrated “the return of the Santander Golf Tour to Pedreña, one of the most iconic courses on the calendar, where we always feel at home. The players really enjoy competing here.“ She also thanked ”the club team for their efforts in keeping the course in exceptional condition, on par with any major international tournament, as well as the sponsors, who make this circuit one of the most special in Europe.” Finally, she wanted to highlight the sporting incentive of the event: “The player who tops the ranking after this event will receive an invitation to the Tenerife Women’s Open (a European Tour event) to be held from June 5 to 8, so we are expecting a very special competition this week.”
The third tournament of the season has a unique format on the calendar. The Pro-Am event will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, giving customers the opportunity to play alongside the circuit’s professionals. The tournament will start on Wednesday, May 14, in medal play mode, and will serve to decide the match play draw. On Thursday, May 15, the round of 16 and quarterfinals will be played, while on Friday, May 16, the semifinals and grand final will be held.
Twenty-one players from five different countries will participate in the event. Among them are Russian Nina Pegova, winner in 2024, and some familiar names from the Ladies European Tour, such as Leticia Ras-Anderica, Paz Marfà, and Natasha Fear.
