Paz Marfà and María Herráez among the contenders for the title in the Santander Golf Tour LETAS

- Leaders Justice Bosio and Andrea Bergsdottir share the lead at seven under par after two solid, flawless rounds
- Paz Marfá and María Herráez, three strokes behind, keep the local hopes alive on what promises to be an exciting final day
The second day of the Santander Golf Tour LETAS at Naturávila Golf has left everything to be decided. Australia’s Justice Bosio, the sole leader after the first round, and Iceland’s Andrea Bergsdottir, who carded a brilliant round on Friday afternoon, now share the lead with a total of -7. But behind them, just three strokes back, are two Spanish names who keep alive the hope of a local victory: Paz Marfá and María Herráez.
Bosio once again demonstrated her consistency on the Ávila course, carding a 70 and highlighting her ability to bounce back. Despite starting with a bogey on the first hole, the Australian quickly recovered and added birdies on the 6th, 11th and 15th, completing another round without any major mistakes that keeps her firmly at the top. For her part, Bergsdottir, who had finished the first day at -4, carded a 69 that included birdies on holes 4, 7, 10 and 15, and a single mistake on the par-3 third hole. Her consistency makes her a serious contender for the title on the final day on Saturday.
On the Spanish front, Paz Marfá endured a round of ups and downs that could well be worth its weight in gold. She started strongly with a birdie on the 1st hole, but then made two mistakes on the 7th and 8th that tested her mental strength. In the second round, a birdie on the 11th, followed by another mistake on the 12th, did not shake her confidence. She finished with another birdie on the 15th to seal a par round that leaves her fifth with a total of -4. The Catalan is still in contention for the win and is confident she will find her best form on Saturday.
The one who really shone was Madrid’s María Herráez, the star of the day. After an uneven first round (four bogeys and two birdies on the first 11 holes), Herráez turned her round around with a spectacular second half. She scored a birdie on the 12th, an eagle on the 15th, and closed with birdies on the 16th and 18th to complete a round of -3 and also move to -4 in the overall standings.
At the end of her round, the Madrid-born player wanted to highlight the importance of her team on such a changeable day: “There was a moment when I got stuck and wasn’t feeling entirely comfortable. However, that’s when I stopped to talk to my caddie, who gave me a lot of encouragement and helped me to focus on what was important, which was to get back into my game. I wanted to keep playing a few more holes at the pace I had found.”
Amaia Latorre also stood out at times, taking the provisional lead at -6. However, three bogeys on the last six holes saw her drop back to -3 overall, in a creditable tenth place. The Alava native, however, has shown great form and is still in contention if she manages a low round on Saturday.
In addition to Marfá, Herráez and Latorre, three other Spanish players made the cut: María Parra and Marina Escobar, both at -1, and Marta Muñoz from Ávila, who managed to finish at +1 after a more solid second round. In total, six Spanish players will be present on the decisive day, with two of them among the top five.
Rounding out the top five are Lauren Holmey of the Netherlands, winner of this season’s Santander Golf Tour Girona, and Emma Lundgren of Italy, both tied for third at -5. With only four strokes separating the top ten, the battle for the title at Naturávila promises to be exciting until the very last putt.
With only three strokes separating them from the lead, the chances of seeing a Spanish player lift the trophy at Naturávila are still very much alive. Paz Marfá and María Herráez are in a privileged position, while Amaia Latorre, María Parra, Marina Escobar and Marta Muñoz will try to sign a great round to climb the rankings. The outcome is still open, and everything points to an exciting final day, in which Spanish women’s golf could once again take centre stage.
