Luxury line-up at the Laukariz Country Club for the Santander Golf Tour Vizcaya

08 Oct
  • Twenty-five players from six different countries will compete on 8 and 9 October in the sixth event of the season
  • Maximum equality in the circuit rankings: the battle for first place goes through Laukariz

This morning, the traditional Santander Golf Tour Pro-Am took place at the Laukariz Country Club, with Ana Pina’s team emerging victorious. With the atmosphere already electric and expectations running high, tomorrow at 9 a.m. will see the start of the first of two days of competition in a setting that, once again this season, brings together many of the big names on the tour.

The field of 25 players represents six nationalities and a group of contenders looking to make their mark. Lauren Holmey — this year’s winner at Empordà Golf and leader of the ranking (87,165 points) — tops the list after a remarkably consistent season. Close behind is Alejandra Llaneza, champion of the Santander Golf Tour LETAS at Naturávila Golf and second in the rankings (86,400 points); the Mexican arrives in Laukariz after a great year on the LET Access Series (LETAS) circuit, as does the Dutch player Holmey. Marina Escobar from Almería, third with 59,769 points, arrives in good form and with a real chance of making a big leap if she plays her best this week.

Another notable name this week is Amaia Latorre, fifth in the rankings and winner this season at the Parador de El Saler Golf Course. The Alava native, with three titles on the circuit, also made her debut this year on the LETAS (Ahlsell Trophy by Destination Jönköping, Sweden) and has gained experience on the Ladies European Tour with outstanding results; a victory here could put her right in the fight for the number one spot. Rounding out the top 10 are names such as María Villanueva from Guipúzcoa —two top-3 finishes in 2024 (Izki Golf and Real Golf de Pedreña) in her professional debut— and María Herráez, last year’s ranking champion with two wins (Empordà Golf and Club de Golf El Bosque) and four top-10 finishes, who is looking to regain her form in the decisive stretch of the season.

The tournament will feature three Basque representatives: Amaia Latorre, María Villanueva and Carmen Sainz, a local player from Club de Campo Laukariz, who is competing ‘at home’ this week. In addition, Ana Pina and Beatriz Barrios are making their professional debuts, and there will be three amateurs in the field: Carmen Sainz, Amanda Revuelta (sister of Andrea Revuelta) and Sweden’s Evelina Gulliksson. The international line-up is completed by a large Spanish contingent (María Parra, Natasha Fear, Marta Pérez, Elisa Orduna, Reme Cortés, Elena Melich, Marta Muñoz, Raquel Romero, Clara Moyano) as well as Vanessa Knecht (Switzerland), Linn Wiberg (Sweden), and England’s Brogan Townend, Katrina Gillum and Shannon O’Dwyer.

The week will also have some attractions beyond the title. Carmen Sainz will have her brother Javier Sainz, winner of the Challenge Tour (Scottish Challenge 2022) and Spanish Professional Champion 2024, on her team. Nuria Iturrioz, winner of this year’s Aramco Houston Championship on the Ladies European Tour and five-time winner on the circuit, will caddie for Marina Escobar; and María Hernández from Pamplona, LET champion, will also caddie during the tournament in Laukariz. All of these ingredients will heighten the competitive interest and bring the public closer to the great names in European golf.

With the rankings red hot and a lot at stake this week, the Santander Golf Tour Vizcaya 2025 promises a fierce battle from start to finish. The competition kicks off tomorrow, Wednesday, and on Thursday we will know the name of the first champion in Laukariz.
