Harang Lee leads on a windy first day at the Santander Golf Tour Zaragoza
- The Cantabrian player carded a one-under-par round to take the sole lead at the Real Club de Golf La Peñaza
- The 14-year-old amateur from Aragon, Constanza Beamonte, is tied for fifteenth place
The wind was the main protagonist on the first day of the Santander Golf Tour Zaragoza, held at the Real Club de Golf La Peñaza, where 35 players from 12 different countries faced very challenging weather conditions. From the outset, strong gusts of wind—reaching speeds of up to 70 kilometres per hour—affected the players’ game and forced many to rethink their strategy on an already demanding course.
In this context, Harang Lee from Cantabria took the lead with a score of one under par (-1) after a first day of competition in which she showed off her full repertoire. The player, who achieved her first professional victory at the Santander Golf Tour Cantabria 2020, had a difficult start with three consecutive bogeys on holes 2, 3 and 4, but reacted brilliantly with three birdies in a row (5, 6 and 7). Two more pars before completing the first round put her in the lead.
Lee kept her composure on the back nine. She added another birdie on the par-5 11th hole, and despite a bogey on the 14th (her only bogey on the back nine), she carded a final birdie on the 16th—achieving a birdie on every par-5 hole on the course—to close with two final pars and take the lead at the end of the day. At the end of her round, the player assessed her performance: “The truth is that it was a very difficult day. The wind was very strong from early on and you had to be very patient. I started with three bogeys in a row, but I kept my cool and managed to recover with three consecutive birdies. I didn’t change anything in my game, I just kept hitting good shots and trying not to get frustrated. The course is spectacular, the greens are very fast and in perfect condition. You have to stay on the fairway, be accurate and, above all, keep a cool head. I would love to win here again on the Santander Golf Tour; it’s been a while since that victory in 2020 and to do it on a course like La Peñaza would be very special.”
Among the pursuers, Marta Sanz completed a very consistent round to move within two strokes of the lead (+1). The Madrid native, a regular on the European circuit, carded a total of 73 strokes and managed to keep up with the Cantabrian throughout the day, leaving the door open for what would be her first victory on the Santander Golf Tour tomorrow.
Three strokes behind the leader (+3) is a group of players who still have their options intact ahead of Friday’s final round: Alejandra Llaneza (Mexico), Amaia Latorre from Álava, María Villanueva from Guipúzcoa —who scored the only eagle of the day on the 16th hole— and Jae Bowers from England.
The Aragonese players deserve a special mention. Elisa Orduna, a regular on the circuit, finished the day at +11, while Constanza Beamonte, a 14-year-old amateur, surprised everyone with a creditable fifteenth place. Beamonte, a member of La Peñaza, is the absolute champion of Aragon under-18 and runner-up in the Spanish Junior Championship, and was facing her first professional experience in front of her home crowd.
After the round, the young player shared her feelings with a maturity beyond her years: “It was a difficult day, especially because of the wind. I didn’t putt well, but I wasn’t nervous. I know the course well and I think I can do better tomorrow. My dream would be to win a Santander Golf Tour event one day, and to do it here, at home, would be incredible.‘ Regarding her promising future, she added: ’This year I was the overall champion of Aragon and runner-up in the Spanish Junior Championship, so I’m very happy. The experience in this tournament is being very nice. I hope to continue growing and, in the future, perhaps reach the European circuit or the LPGA; why not?”

The second and final day will be played tomorrow, Friday 24th October, when the winner of the Santander Golf Tour Zaragoza 2025 will be decided.
